EXTRA NOTES:
TEER, James, born Newcastle, Co. Down, Ireland, son of fisherfolk. Arrived Australia c1846, then to West Coast. Survivor of the wreck of “General Grant”. Hokitika Museum has a lot of information on James.
By 1877, 7 births, 1 marriage and 2 deaths had been recorded in Jacksons Bay Settlement.
By 1878, 3 children had died in less than three weeks.
17.2.1875 - Resident Agent MacFarlane wrote to Bonar: . . ."What steps will I take with regard to the graves that are here? I find that they are on one of the streets . . . . I have to report the finding of a coffin containing the remains of a child apparently about 6 months old; the men dug it up in forming a right-of-way between the cottages. I had it re-buried near the other graves; it was evidently an European child as the coffin was very neatly made, but there was nothing to indicate to whom it belonged."
(It is obvious from this report that burials had taken place in the actual township prior to February 1875. Possibly all removed to the now Arawata Cemetery?) Some names of Italian settlers at Jacksons Bay: FRANDI, Aristodeme, arrived 1876, departed 1879, large family. LUCHESI, Fortunate, arrived 1876, departed 1879, large family. EGISTO, Calamai, arrived 1876, departed 1879, large family.
